Why the water of the Verdon is green and turquoise

It’s the first thing that strikes you: emerald water in the river, milky turquoise on the lakes. Where does this surreal colour come from? Here is the explanation, simple and verified — and it is this very colour that gave the Verdon its name.

The green of the river

Along its course, the Verdon displays a deep, almost surreal green. This colour comes from fine particles and micro-organisms in suspension — micro-algae and mineral elements (including fluorine) released by the limestone rocks the river flows through from its source, above Allos. The light that penetrates this very pure water is partly absorbed, partly reflected back: the result is this characteristic emerald hue. It is from this that the river takes its name: “Verdon” comes from “vert” (green).

The turquoise of the lakes

On the large reservoirs — Lake Sainte-Croix foremost, but also Castillon or Esparron — the water changes its coat: the green of the river becomes a milky turquoise, lighter and more luminous. The reason? In dam lakes, the water is laden with very fine limestone and clay particles in suspension. These microparticles reflect the light instead of letting it slip away towards the bottom: the water starts to “glow” from within, like a lagoon. The higher the sun and the clearer the water, the more brilliant the turquoise — hence those dreamlike photos in midsummer.

A colour that changes

The colour of the Verdon is never quite the same twice. It depends on the time of day and the season (the low, raking light of morning or evening gives darker greens), on the depth, on the clarity of the water, and on the run-off after rain or dam releases — which can temporarily cloud it.
