Access & transport
The Verdon has neither an airport nor a mainline train station: you arrive via the coast or the valleys, then head into the canyon. Here are the gateways in — plane, train, bus, car — and what is still possible without a car.
Two airports flank the Verdon, each its own gateway:
From the airport, the rest of the journey is by rental car or Zou! bus.
No mainline service reaches the Verdon directly. The access stations are:
The Train des Pignes (the scenic Nice–Digne line) serves Annot, Thorame-Haute and Saint-André-les-Alpes, at the gates of the Haut-Verdon. Between Saint-André-les-Alpes and Digne, the train is replaced by coaches during the rehabilitation works on the Moriez tunnel (Barrême is served only by these coaches). According to Alpes-de-Haute-Provence Tourisme, the line is due to reopen fully by train in spring 2027 — check the day’s service status on cpzou.fr.
Three regional Zou! lines serve the Verdon. Timetables change from one season to the next: check them and book at zou.maregionsud.fr (info line: 04 13 94 30 50). From 1 October 2026, the 450 no longer serves La Palud-sur-Verdon or Rougon (Point Sublime): no regular bus line enters the heart of the gorge any more. The 450 is reduced to the Moustiers-Sainte-Marie – Riez section and runs on school days only, never on Saturdays or Sundays. Castellane is still served all year round by the 51 Nice–Digne line, two coaches a day in each direction. Measured on 6 October 2026 in the Zou! network’s official open timetables (LOv2 licence).
Until 30 September 2026, this was the Grand Canyon line: it linked Riez, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, La Palud-sur-Verdon, Rougon / Point Sublime (arrival point of the Blanc-Martel trail) and Castellane. Since 1 October 2026, it has served just the Moustiers-Sainte-Marie – Riez section, on school days only, never on Saturdays or Sundays.
The long-distance link from the coast: Nice and its airport, via Grasse, through to Castellane and Saint-André-les-Alpes. The main way into the Verdon from the east.
The upper Verdon valley: links the Val d’Allos / La Foux resort and the villages of the Haut-Verdon to the rail network (connection with the Train des Pignes at Saint-André).
The most flexible way to explore. From Marseille / Aix, take the A51; from Nice, the A8 then mountain roads. Two things to know:
Until 30 September 2026, the Zou! 450 bus line combined with the Park’s Blanc-Martel shuttle let you do the great canyon hike without a car. Since 1 October 2026, the 450 no longer enters the gorge. Here is what remains:
2026 shuttle: from April 3 to November 1, daily from June 29 to September 14. Return fare €8.50 adult / €5.50 child. Online booking strongly recommended (navette.parcduverdon.fr): without a booking, access to the shuttle is not guaranteed. Bookings close at 6pm each day; after that, tickets are bought on board (cash or card), if seats are left.
End of the Blanc-Martel trail diverted. As of 14 October 2026, according to the Park’s shuttle website (navette.parcduverdon.fr), a municipal order issued by Rougon on 14 August 2026 closes the end of the trail, following a rockfall, between the exit of the Couloir Samson and Point Sublime. RD 952: daytime closures at the Clue de Chasteuil. According to Rougon town hall (notice of 2 October 2026), the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département will be securing the cliff at the Clue de Chasteuil, on the RD 952 between Castellane and the gorge, from Monday 2 November to Friday 11 December 2026. The road will be closed Monday to Thursday from 8:15am to 12:30pm and from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, and on Fridays from 8:15am to 12:30pm, with two 15-minute reopenings, at 10:00am and 3:30pm, under alternating one-way traffic. RD 952, Castellane municipality: alternating one-way traffic (roadworks). From Monday 26 October 2026 to Friday 22 January 2027, over about 650 m outside the built-up area (reference points 3+000 to 3+650), alternating one-way traffic will be controlled by lights from Monday 8am to Friday 5pm, day and night, and the road may be closed on weekdays, from 8am to 5pm, for up to 10 minutes at a time; at weekends and on public holidays, one direction will have priority. Speed limited to 50 km/h. These works are in addition to those at the Clue de Chasteuil (from Monday 2 November to Friday 11 December 2026). No. The Verdon has neither an airport nor a mainline train station within its territory. The nearest airports are Marseille-Provence (for the west: Moustiers, Gréoux, Lake Sainte-Croix) and Nice Côte d’Azur (for the east: Castellane). The access train stations are Aix-en-Provence TGV, Manosque, Les Arcs-Draguignan (on the Var side) and Digne-les-Bains (terminus of the Train des Pignes). From there, you reach the Verdon by car or Zou! bus.

Not as simply as before. Until 30 September 2026, the Zou! 450 bus line served the Grand Canyon axis, connecting with the Park’s Blanc-Martel shuttle. Since 1 October 2026, the bus takes you as far as Castellane (line 51), and no further into the gorge. You then need a taxi, to be booked in advance, to reach La Palud-sur-Verdon, where the Blanc-Martel shuttle leaves from on the dates in its calendar. The Blanc-Martel trail is not a loop: it starts at the Chalet de la Maline and finishes at Point Sublime. They close for winter and generally reopen around mid-June depending on snow cover. In 2026, the Col d’Allos (2,250 m) reopened on 12 June to vehicles under 3.5 t. Note that from 14 September to 13 November 2026, roadworks stop traffic there during the day, Monday to Thursday from 8am to 5pm and Friday from 8am to 1pm. It is not a continuous closure: the pass stays open every evening and overnight (Monday to Thursday, from 5pm to 8am the next morning) and without interruption every weekend, from Friday 1pm to Monday 8am (source: Allos town hall). Warning: from Monday 19 October to Friday 30 October 2026, the pass cannot be crossed. On the Ubaye side (Uvernet-Fours municipality), the RD 908 is closed to all vehicles day and night, weekends included, with no diversion possible, for works on the carriageway. From Allos you can drive up to the pass outside the roadworks closure hours, but you cannot continue down to Barcelonnette.
