What to see, what to do

Vinon-sur-Verdon aerodrome

A major gliding venue, presented as the leading glider centre in France. The airfield covers about 138 hectares and hosts several disciplines (gliding, light aviation, microlights, aeromodelling, aerobatics). The Association Aéronautique Verdon Alpilles (AAVA) operates a fleet of around twenty modern gliders there; the site sees about 220 gliders pass through each year and attracts glider pilots from all over Europe, taking advantage of the updrafts from the neighbouring hills.

The village's parish church, also known under the dedication of Saint-Sauveur.

Clock Tower

A 17th-century tower topped with an 18th-century campanile; its bells date from 1694 and 1696.

Verdon Bridge

A bridge with three segmental arches, built in 1780. The Vinon bridge was bombed by the American air force on 15 August 1944, then destroyed during the fighting of the Liberation before being rebuilt.

Saint-André mill

A former mill that has been renovated, converted into a group lodge (capacity about 55) and a performance hall.

Roman mosaic of the Domaine de Pèbre

On the right bank of the Verdon, the Pèbre estate has yielded the foundations of a villa and a remarkable mosaic from the late 4th century, known as 'the Three Graces and Bacchus', discovered in 1859. Restored in 2014, it has been on display since 2015 in Manosque (the council chamber of the town hall).

History of Vinon-sur-Verdon

The area bears traces of Gallo-Roman occupation, notably at the Pèbre estate (a villa and a mosaic from the late 4th century, on the line of an ancient road). The village is first mentioned in a deed of 1074. From the 12th to the 15th century, the Saint-André Abbey of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon owned the rural church 'Sancte Marie de Tuscis' in the area. The Wars of Religion gave rise to a battle here in 1591. In 1710, a peasant revolt, known as the 'salt mules' revolt, saw inhabitants lay siege to an inn. The bridge over the Verdon, built in 1780, was bombed by the American air force on 15 August 1944 during the Provence landings. In the 20th century, the establishment of the aerodrome made Vinon a leading gliding centre. The proximity of the Cadarache research centre (CEA), and then the construction of the ITER fusion reactor, have deeply shaped the recent development of the commune, which is experiencing strong population growth.
