Plateau country alternating fertile plains with hills of downy oak (the forests of Saint-Jean and Pélenc). A modified Mediterranean climate; annual rainfall of the order of 780 mm; a zone of moderate seismic activity (zone 3). The main watercourses belong to the Verdon basin (the Enriou ravine, the Redot valley and the Beau Rivé stream).

What to see, what to do

Windmills of Régusse

Two windmills restored in 1995 and inaugurated on 3 August 1996: one still produces flour, the other houses a museum of farming tools. Their original date remains uncertain — regional sources trace them back to the 12th-13th centuries, whereas the earliest known documentary mention is the 1565 assessment of the lands of the lordship. The link with the Templars is attested by a deed of 1292 requiring the inhabitants to grind their grain at the mill of the Temple of Saint-Maurice.

Château de Grimaldi (Grimaud-Régusse)

A former seigneurial castle, of which two towers survive, in the heart of the old village.

Clock Tower

The bell tower of the old village, a characteristic element of local Provençal heritage.

Commandery of Saint-Maurice

A former Templar commandery (one of the five in the Var), established around 1160 on the lands of Saint-Maurin. The remains stand on private property, not open to visitors.

Dolmen of Le Jas de Mèze

A dolmen of the Chalcolithic period, evidence of prehistoric occupation of the plateau.

Church of Saint-Laurent

A parish church built in 1676; in 1875 it received the bell from the former chapel of Villeneuve.

Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Miséricorde

A chapel of 1642, formerly that of the confraternity of White Penitents, now converted into a museum (the Maison du Combattant).

Chapel of Saint-Jean d'Albert

The chapel that gave its name to the hamlet of Saint-Jean, which developed from the 1970s-1980s onwards.

History of Régusse

The site, first Celto-Ligurian (Regussia), was occupied by the Romans. After the Wars of Religion of the 16th century, the deserted village was repopulated in 1580, notably by Hungarian families. A former possession of the Order of the Temple dependent on the commandery of Saint-Maurice, Régusse is recorded as a Templar fief in 1274; after 1309 it passed to the royal domain, then in 1319 to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, before being exchanged in 1322 with Arnaud de Trian. The Castellane family then held it until its sale in 1564. In 1613 Gaspard de Grimaud bought the lordship, raised to a marquisate in 1649; his descendants took the surname Grimaldi (with no connection to the Grimaldi of Monaco). In 1840 Villeneuve was attached to Régusse. The commune is associated with Alexandre Gariel, mayor and companion in exile of Victor Hugo, imprisoned and then deported after the uprising against Napoleon III.
