What to see, what to do

Baudinard gorges (lower gorges of the Verdon)

Lower gorges cut by the Verdon downstream of the Lac de Sainte-Croix, with cliffs about 100 to 150 m high. They can be discovered on foot from the heights above and on the water by canoe and kayak, in an atmosphere more intimate and wilder than that of the great canyon upstream.

Lac de Sainte-Croix

A large reservoir lake very close by, used for water sports and bathing, upstream of the Sainte-Croix dam.

Decorated caves and prehistoric remains

Occupation from the Neolithic onwards, with Chassey-culture deposits and rock art. The 'grotte de l'église' ('church cave') has painted motifs (red stars on a white ground) and extends over three levels of galleries. The area also preserves the traces of an Iron Age oppidum fitted with towers — a rare thing in the region.

Church of Saint-Jacques

A parish church of Romanesque origin (11th century), restored in the 20th century (work in 1921) and then again in the 2000s (2006).

Remains of the château and the priory of Valmogne

The ruins of a rectangular 14th-century keep. Nearby, the priory of Valmogne is said to have origins going back to the end of the 5th century.

History of Baudinard-sur-Verdon

The area of Baudinard has long been occupied, as the Neolithic deposits and the rock art of its caves bear witness, together with an Iron Age oppidum. The castrum appears in the archives in 1096 in the form Castrum de Beldisnard. In 1206 the lords Pons Albert and Guy de Baudinard made a donation of lands from the estate. In 1389 Elzéar de Sabran became lord of the place through his marriage to Baucette de Blacas; the Sabran family held the lordship until the Revolution. Long simply Baudinard, the commune took the name Baudinard-sur-Verdon to underline its link with the river. A rural village of the Provençal Haut-Var, it now lives above all from the nature tourism attached to the lower gorges and the Lac de Sainte-Croix.
