Renting a car

Renting a Car to Visit the Verdon

The Verdon has to be earned behind the wheel — but not every vehicle feels at ease here. If you’re travelling by motorhome or campervan, renting a small car for the length of your stay is often the best move: you leave the big vehicle at the campsite and freely explore the narrow roads and the viewpoints. Here’s the area’s real supply, without sugar-coating it.

Why rent a car when you’re travelling by motorhome

  • The Route des Crêtes (D23) and many of the gorges’ smaller roads are narrow, winding, with one-way sections: a motorhome finds them tough going, and depending on its size it can sometimes be banned outright. A small car changes everything.
  • Parking at the flagship sites (Point Sublime, Pont du Galetas, the viewpoints) is sized for cars: in a van you’ll circle for a long time and end up parking far away.
  • You keep your pitch at the campsite (often paid per night) and travel light — more flexible, less fuel, less stress in the perched villages.

The reality on the ground: few rental agencies in the heart of the Verdon

Car rental agencies are rare inside the gorges themselves. For a real choice (and fair prices), the supply is concentrated in the gateway towns and the airports, ideally picked up on arrival:

  • Marseille Provence Airport and Nice Côte d’Azur Airport — the widest choice, available as soon as you land.
  • Manosque, Digne-les-Bains, Aix-en-Provence, Draguignan — the gateway towns with train stations and agencies.

We don’t list a specific agency in these towns until we’ve verified it: go through the rental company’s official website or a recognised comparison site, and book ahead in summer.
